Araghchi emphasizes Iran’s inherent right to self-defense

TEHRAN, Apr. 03 (MNA) – Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stressed Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, safeguarding its national sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of US-Israeli strikes.

He made the remarks in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov late on Thursday, emphasizing Iran’s right to self-defense and maintaining its national sovereignty and territorial integrity against ongoing US and Israeli aggression.

During the phone call, the two top diplomats discussed the latest regional and international developments in the light of the continued US and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Emphasizing the inherent right of Iran to legitimately defend its national sovereignty, and territorial integrity, Araghchi strongly condemned the attacks of aggressors on his country's infrastructures, including universities, bridges, and scientific centers.

Referring to the insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian foreign minister highlighted that US and Israel are the root cause of insecurity in the strait, adding, “Currently, the traffic of vessels from countries that are not involved in the military aggression against Iran is underway in the Strait of Hormuz with the coordination of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran."

Condemning the provocations of the United States and some countries in the UN Security Council to put pressure on Iran, Araghchi stressed that any provocative action by the aggressors and their supporters will only complicate the situation.

Not only issuing a resolution by the UN Security Council regarding the Strait of Hormuz will not solve any problem, but also will become part of the problem, he continued.

Denouncing the attacks by the US and the Zionist regime on the cultural sites, including the Orthodox Church in Tehran, Araghchi termed the evil acts of the Us and Israel 'a clear violation of international regulations', calling on all countries and international organizations, especially UNESCO, to condemn these criminal acts committed by the US and Israel.

The foreign minister of Russia, for his part, reaffirmed his country's stance in condemning the continued US and Israeli military aggression against Iran, and briefed his Iranian counterpart on Moscow's consecutive contacts and consultations with the regional countries to reduce tensions.

Lavrov stressed the need for all parties to return to the path of diplomacy and a political resolution to the crisis, declaring that Russia would present initiatives and proposals to reduce tensions and manage the crisis in the region.

The Iranian and Russian foreign ministers also agreed to continue consultations and cooperate with each other in this regard.
